FAQ - How to Get Rid of Mice, Etc.

I'll now answer many of the general questions that I get regarding rodent control. Send me your questions, and I'll continue to update the below list:

HOW MUCH DOES RAT CONTROL COST?

That of course varies depending on the company hired. A pest control company might charge a low monthly fee of $39.95, but it goes on for years, because they never solve the problem. I would expect a good, professional wildlife and rat removal company, one who solves the rat problem permanently, by doing full rodent-proofing repairs to the home or building, full rat trapping, and attic cleanup, over several service visits, to run north of $500. It is money well spent.

 CAN I DO IT MYSELF?

Of course! Save money by doing the work yourself. Be aware, it is real work, and takes a lot of time and attention to detail. Read my do-it-yourself guide for instructions.

CAN MY REGULAR PEST CONTROL COMPANY GET RID OF RATS?

No! Hiring a company that also deals with insects is the worst choice you can make. Read all about it on my Rat Pest Control page.

 WHO SHOULD I HIRE?

You should hire a wildlife removal company, because rats are wild animals, not insects, and the approach to solving a rodent problem is the same as the approach to solving a raccoon, opossum, squirrel problem. Insects are complete different. For any company that you are considering hiring, read my website first, understand how the job is done correctly, and ask the company you want to hire the correct questions - do they seal up the rat entry points? Do they do a full attic inspection? What is their method of rat removal? Do they clean up afterward?

 DOES RAT POISON WORK?

A resounding no! It only creates more problems, and it will absolutely never get rid of rats. Read all about it on my rat poison page.

ARE THERE ANY RAT REPELLENTS THAT WORK?

Unfortunately, no. Many are marketed and sold to make a quick buck, but there is absolutely no effective repellent. If there was, everyone would use it exclusively, and everyone would know about it. This is the age of the internet and information - there's lots of bad info out there, but if there was a real repellent that worked, everyone would know about it.

 DO RATS SPREAD DISEASE?

Yes. But in my opinion, it's not like you're going to fall over dead tomorrow just because you have rats in your attic. However, there are real health risks, even if rare. Read my rat diseases page for more info.

HOW CAN I TELL IF I HAVE A RAT PROBLEM?

I have written a list of symptoms on my Rat Problems page. Basically, if you hear quick scampering up the walls and in the ceiling at night, then that's a good clue. Ultimately only a full property inspection will tell you for sure. Believe me, rats leave behind a LOT of little brown clues!

 WHERE DO RATS LIVE?

In cities and human buildings. They aren't really wild animals. They are city animals. Yeah, they can survive in the wild, but they really seem suited toward human habitat, and buildings. They love to live in attics, walls, ceilings, crawl spaces, kitchens, warehouses, restaurants, offices, etc.

CAN I DECREASE THE NUMBER OF RATS LIVING OUTSIDE?

Yes, by keeping things clean and by eliminating nesting areas, particularly in buildings. Seal up rat entry points into buildings, and there are way less rats outside. I do not advocate mindlessly spreading poison or rat baiting stations outside, that doesn't help a damn thing.

HOW DO I CLEAN UP RAT FECES AND OTHER WASTE?

I've written all about how to vacuum, remove by hand, and fog with sanitizer on my decontamination page.

HOW DO I FIND AND REMOVE A DEAD RAT?

You sniff it out, basically, and if need be, cut a hole in the wall or ceiling where the dead rat lies.
